@ Monday

You are not welcome here -_-

Good morning friends.
well played sir

Mana Gems could use some reworking.

Exactly what the title says. Specifiaclly the amount of charges and cooldown. For arcane, AP is on 1.5 min cooldown with talents...why doesn't Improved Mana Gem affect the CD to match this? As with the damage increase from the talents it makes the most sense to use them in conjunction. IMO 5 charges of Mana Gem static and have Imp Mana Gem also reduce CD to 1.5 min.
you still have to wait till evocation has around 30 seconds left anyways so it wouldn't make a difference.

Fire mage trinkets

So at the moment I'm using Necromantic Focus and Rune of Zeth but in the upcoming week Bottled Wishes will become available and i was wondering if it would be worth it to switch out one of the two trinkets i currently have for it. I'm not at 2005 haste yet which is why I'm wondering if it will be worth it.

Thanks for the help.
The VP trinket pulls a head by only 80 or so DPS over both of the trinkets your using according to a sim I used. Buying the Cape and wand should be your first VP purchases, unless you get the Zon'ozz wand this lockout.

It's a decent trinket but It's lack of pure intellect as a static stat makes it weaker than other VP pieces. As far as the 2005 soft-haste plateau there's a few reforges or other pieces of gear you can pick up that will bring you to it. The well of eternity ring being one them.

VPLC is still pretty strong compared to what's available in DS, if you can get your guild to put a 10 man FL together.
Why would you buy the wand, when the Boots, Neck, Ring, wrists are all a better dps upgrade
Insignia of the Corrupted Mind
For all of your haste desires.
Necromantic Focus is really not a great Fire trinket, so i m sure that would be a significant upgrade over it.

Frost PvP questions

Ok me and my buddy were brainstorming and yes ik this is like 1 research time away but im lazy atm and was wondering... mastery, haste,or crit. stat priorities im confused. they all same decent
Well a little more research time would find you this ;)

:P ty
I don't know the length of 1 research time. The OP response providing the link only tells us that the response was during the same day of the OP. That's also all that I know about the OP's response of gratitude for the link formally expressed :P ty. Hence, I will never know if it was worth it for the OP to ask this here. This ruined my day.

Another, What's better thread!

Dragonfire Orb+ Rathrak, the Poisonous Mind OR Lightning Rod as a FIRE mage.

I'm not really sure because i'm going to have to reforge alot of my gear if i roll with dagger+offhand. with the staff (and when i'm in pve gear) I'm at exactly 17% hit (Amazing i know right)
Lightning Rod, unless its a heavy AOE fight.
Rathrak and dragonfire are better, even on single target fights.
Thankyou hiroran, and thanks for copying my trans >:(

MageManaBar 1.72: More than Mana Management

Hello everyone. I am copy-pasting the text below the break on behalf of Angayelle, the mod author of MageManaBar and CombustionHelper. He is unable to post on these USA forums.

Angayelle will still be reading this thread, however, so if you have comments, questions or feedback... feel free to mention it all here and i'll copy/paste any responses he has for you.

----

This is the new thread for version 1.72 release of MageManaBar. As always, have fun and report to me any bugs and requests.

For more skins and settings, have a look at:
http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1003973-MageManaBar-1.7-Mana-management-but-not-only

So let me present again this wonderful addon of mine to people who haven't heard about it yet.

This is aimed to be the ultimate Mana Bar for Mages. Arcane Mages specifically will find many of MageManaBar's features invaluable in helping to manage Mana optimally and refine their gameplay. About the gameplay suggestions present in MageManaBar, let me say again that they are totally optional, if you don't like it, just remove it. And if you feel it's making Arcane too much easy to play and allow what you call noobs to top the meters as they shouldn't be able to, i'm sorry but this is the goal of this addon : help mages getting the best of what they can do.

But there is nice things for skilled players too with unique features never seen before (by me at least...) like Mana overflow report, mage armor tick cooldown, spell cost indication and so on.

Anyway, have a look and as always send me feedback and suggestions here or on curse : http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/magemanabar.aspx

• It will always show your real Mana Pool by ignoring temporary Int Buffs which distort your Mana % on standard Unitframes (Eg: Darkmoon Card: Volcano, Power Torrent, Synapse Springs etc).
• Marker at 35% Mana to show where Evocation can be used without wasting Mana (Factors in ~2 ticks of Mage Armor whilst channeling).
• Marker at (Max Mana - 12 405) to show where Mana Gem can be used without wasting any Mana.
• Marker for "Next Mage Armor Tick". (Showing how much Mana the next tick of Mage Armor will give). Featuring autohide when not present in fire/frost spec. NEW !
• Marker for Flame Orb mini burn. (Showing how much mana you should regen through AM spam).
• Marker for Arcane Torrent.
• Timers for Evocation, Mana Gem, Flame Orb, Arcane Torrent and Mage Armor (Ticks).
• Show your expected current cast mana usage in realtime on the mana bar.
• Optional and fully customizable health bar.
• Color settings to change the color of the mana bar based on markers crossed.
Information panels that you can unlock and place wherever you want on the bar or the screen, change size and background. This should allow you to make the Mana bar the way you want it. Also featuring a tag list to choose whatever info you want in the style you want (Absolute Cur/Max HP, Cur/Percent mana, Absolute Cur/Max mana, Mastery, Spellpower, Time To Die and many more !!).
• Realtime information of mana overflow and lost mana due to end of intellect procs. You will know each time how much mana is wasted in chat report with a summary at the end of the fight to help you refine your gameplay.
• Optional advanced gameplay suggestions during fight based on your cooldowns and tested theorycrafted concepts to help you mastering Arcane way of managing mana. You can also enable or disable any of theses suggestions if it doesn't fit your way of playing.
• Advanced customisation options for all elements of the addon. You can change colors, textures, fonts, size, alpha, ordering of elements. Everything is optional and can be disabled to make MageManaBar what you always dreamed of.
• Arcane explosion manager. Once you use AE with an AB buff the warning panel will show your AE casts on a timer representing your AB Debuff, also showing the current cast time needed to refresh it. Cross the red section and you'll be unable to refresh in time ! NEW!
• Getting closer to UnitFrame replacement with the player menu when right clicking on frame and player selection when left clicking, casting bar and alternate power bar. NEW !
• Import Export manager for settings. You can share your settings with fellow mages and import new ones. Have a look at the post below to get some new settings. NEW !

Right now, version 1.72 release is vailable at : http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/magemanabar in the other download section, have a look and report me.

USE THE RESET BUTTON IN INTERFACE /OPTIONS WHEN UPGRADING FROM BETA TO RELEASE VERSION OR IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEM
I'm trying to get this addon, but there seems to be a prob with curse, browser keeps closing. Another thing I noticed is curse only seems to have vers 1.6.2
You need to go to the Other downloads section to download the v1.7 because it is still in beta.
ok, just found it in other downloads, managed to download it, but curse page still seems to sometimes close my browser when I copy/paste
"http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/magemanabar"

looking forward to trying it out :)
Love the new arcane explosion manager thing. Thanks for all the work on this addon.
hi
Updated OP with 1.72 release.
I really like the AE tracking, it's a great mod, I had my doubts at first, but it really is a great little piece of tracking software. The refinements make it useful for mages who never had an issue tracking mana.

Clicker to button pusher mage

Hi everyone, I am trying to convert myself from a clicker to a button pusher as a Frost mage. In my 5 years playing this game I have gotten by using w,a,s,d to move and clicking everything. In my time playing I have always heard that clickers are at a disadvantage as far as reaction time and getting spells off efficiently. I really enjoy playing this class and wanted to know how some of you configure your spells...this is for PvP or PvE, doesnt really matter.

For me I have as follows:

1 - Frostbolt
2 - Ice Lance
3 - Deep Freeze
4 - Cone of Cold
5 - Frostfirebolt
R- Frost Nova
Mouse wheel when clicked - Blink

All of the rest I click (ice block, barrier spells, etc.). At this point I'm still getting used to this whole button thing and moving my character with the mouse and I guess I should change "a" and "d" to my strafe buttons? Any extra help would be great!

That's a good start.
There's plenty of options for keybindings.
I personally put my main spells on 1 - 5, then use the following for other things.

R, C, X, ~ (next to 1), Caps, Z, F,
Shift 1, Shift 2, Shift 3, Shift 4, Shift 5, Shift R, Shift F.

I use R for counterspell, shift R for spellsteal,
things like that.

I keep all my spells that I use often well within reach.
I also keep other spells between 6 through = that I use now and then.

Though not needed, I would recommend a Razor Naga.
It can be hard to get use to, but once you can use every button on it without thinking about it,
there is no better tool.

Good luck!
Hope this helped a little :)

1 - Frostfire Bolt
2 - Frostbolt
3 - Ice Lance
4 - Deep Freeze
5 - Pet Freeze
6 - Blizzard
7 - Cone of Cold
8 - Cold Snap
9 - Ice Barrier

1 - Presence of Mind
2 - Arcane Blast
3 - Arcane Missles
4 - Arcane Barrage
5 - Arcane Explosion
6 - Don't remember...
7 - Evocation

1 - Living Bomb
2 - Pyroblast
3 - Fireball
4 - Fireblast
5 - Blast Wave
6 - Flamestrike
7 - Dragon's Breath

- is Frost Nova, = is Blink, but Blink is also bound to Mouse Button 5. And Frost Nova and Blink are in the same space, every spec.
`~ <- tilde key is Counterspell. Shift Mouse Button 4 is Ice Block, Shift Mouse Button 5 is Invis.
I think that's it. These are at least mostly correct. xD

Edit: Really should start using preview... >__>
Razor naga mouse to help you convert.90$ but well worth the investment.
I second the suggestion to get a Naga mouse. Those extra 12 buttons on your thumb are a great asset.

You probably want to be sure that "cast on keydown" is turned on so that the benefits of faster reaction time you are getting from using keybinds instead of clicking translates fully to the game.

Another tool you can use to help train yourself to use the keybinds is to simply hide your actionbars after you setup the keybinds. You can't click something if you cant see it. For things that you need to see cooldowns for, you can use a cooldown monitor (like Sexy Cooldown Bar) or power auras / weak auras.
^agreed. naga is very nice, and there are 2 different versions now I think. They're both the same, except one is wireless, or it is an option to be wireless.

Thanks for the tips guys! I have never heard of the Naga mouse, but ill look into that and if it doesnt break the bank I'd be game to try it out.
Any extra mouse buttons are helpful. I don't have a Naga, but it's nice to have interrupts, Polymorph, etc. on a mouse click.
You don't need a naga to use key bindings at all, use normal keys 1-7 , Shift 1-7, alt 1-4 and then RTY/FGH/CVB
Don't forget ` and zxcv.

Also, it's helpful to keep like abilities similar across characters.

My interupt is r on nearly all my toons.
CC is c.
Mouse over focus is Z.
DPS CD is v.
You get the idea....

Another helpful thing is to use a shift modifier for your focus macros.

So shift r is focus interrupt.
Shift c is focus CC.
Etc.

LF Frost themed staff for Mogging.

Since I am a frost mage, I would like to reflect this with my gear when 4.3 hits. Obviously, the best staff for this would be the Frost Lord scythe, but I didn't get it this summer, so I don't have access to it for now. Anyone have any other ideas? I'm thinking maybe the one that drops off Archimonde or the one from Hodir.

For reference, my gear is going to be:
Glacial Robe
Glacial Waistband
Glacial Slippers
Firelord's Mantle
Firelord's Hood
Deathchill Cloak

Greatstaff of the Nexus?
It is a very nice looking staff for Blue/Frost themed sets.
The scythe staff thing from the boss from the fire festival?

If you don't have it obv. wouldn't help you for next patch, but that's my best bet.

Yeah, I'd love to have that staff, but like I said, I didn't get it this summer so I don't have access to it arm. :-)

Hadn't thought of the Greatstaff though, thanks to those that recommended it! I'll try for the Life-Staff as well.
Grand Magister's Staff of Torrents isn't a bad one either.

Mage PVP

What spec is the best for my level for pvp?
Any spec really. You're going to get rocked until you can get ice barrier.

low level pvp sucks.
I remember having to deal with arcane mages back then was infuriating. Arcane barrage is insanely powerful and cheesy.
Wait until 49. Go fire.

Let lulz ensue.

Best action bars for mages?

Not sure if this one belongs in the UI section (IMO it belongs here because we mages tend to use a lot of skills and shift more), but what do you think is the best action bar addon that we mages can get?
Bartender or Dominos. Try both see what you like better. But yea the question is not specific to mages.
I like Bartender personally. It's pretty nice.
Most of your stuff should be key-bound so as long as the addon works and lets you customize the action bars, who cares.... I've just always used Bartender, and it's built into Lui interface which I am currently using out of laziness.
Used Bartender4 for a while. After one patch it didn't get updated for a week and there were bugs, so I switched to Dominos. Hardly noticed any difference.
I'd use whichever updates faster after major patches.

Help identifying headgear

i remember as i was levelling this mage, i equipped this headgear which was sort of a halo of jewels circling on top of my head. but i can't for the life of me remember what it's called..please post if you do know as i would like to transmog that piece
Circle of Flame? (Check the wowhead screenshots)
Are you looking for Tourmaline Crown? I'm currently using that as my transmog head piece and it sounds like what you're looking for.
http://www.wowhead.com/item=31272

BoE
http://www.wowhead.com/item=31272

BoE

Also quite rare - the Tourmaline Crown looks identical and is from a quest line in BC so costs nothing and is easily solo'd.
the piece i had was the crown of endless knowledge. but its the same design as the tourmaline crown so im gonna go do that quest for it.

thanks very much to you all.

by the way, since im trying to look for gear to transmog, i might as well ask about other slots. i remember when i was around level 60 or 70, my gear was such that i didnt look like a mage, more like a fashionista. i remember the chestgear was like a blue long sleeve shirt which wasn't a robe and that's important cause it doesn't drop down to my ankles and cover my trousers.

so if anyone has any suggestions on chestgear that isnt a robe and legpiece that looks like skinny jeans on the toon, please post it here.

ps. if you know of shouldergear that doesnt look like it belongs to WWF's legion of doom, something small, almost non-existent, please share as well.
ok. googled a little and found www.worldofwardrobes.net is a great place to DIY random pieces of gear

low level fun?

so, what spec do you guys find the most fun at these levels?
I would also like to know this : ),
Probably Frost. It just gets a lot of great utility earlier than both of the other specs.
At my lvl I like arcane for the instant AB on a 4 sec cd helps alot. I was fire at the start but find the extra instant cast spell helps out. But as you lvl up I'd say frost
I've rather liked frost so far. This is my main as I'm just coming back after a 2 year hiatus and decided to reroll so I wouldn't be the noob that doesn't know his class.

I like frostbolt. Pew Pew Pew you're dead before you touch me. I open with the pet's AOE Frost spell that freezes them so I can get the +crit multiplier. Then spam frostbolt. At this level I don't run out of mana.

I have 0 BOA's.

Edit: wrong you're :/

Edit #2: Just realized we're all humans. waka waka.
[quote="39413034479"]

Edit: wrong you're :/

quote]

Not sure what you mean here but I said frost to lvl up. I'm not going any higher and arcane seems to hit hard. I like having the instant AB on a 4 sec cd. I can open with Fireball, Ab, and fireblast and take 500-700 hp off someone real quick and the short cd on AB give me one more If i need it. My fireball is a 1.2 sec cast and frostbolt is 1 sec cast time
if you're talking pvp, i pretty much got owned as all specs, until level 69

for pve/dungeons, fire is fun as hell
If you have a lot of heirlooms, going arcane and one shotting even other BoA players at around the first few brackets is incredibely sick and twisted but hilarious at the same time. Although even mediocre rogues will demolish you until you get more resilience and then only good ones will be able to actually put up a fight. Frost is a lot of fun once you get deep freeze.
twinking a mage you want to be arcane. you destroy people with abar
Yeah at low lvs arcane for sure. Especially if you like your name at the top of the recount.
I really enjoyed leveling in fire, kiting mobs while scorching is too much fun.
fire :D
Having leveled a mage to 74 so far... I started off as an Arcane, moved to Fire and after spending a brief time away from playing my mage Went back ast Arcane...

and I have to say... if you have full BoA's and like seeing your name at the top of the recount list for damage... Arcane is the way to go...
Now, you may get beaten in Trash mob DPS or AoE.. but on Single target boss fights... you dominate the damage boards...

Just an example: I was in Utgard Keep and with a combination of Arcane Power, Mirror Images, Mana Gem, Blood Lust and Arcane Blast I hit 4.8k DPS on a boss, the next highest DPS wass a warrior who did 1.2k DPS...

Its really good fun...
just be sure not to pull aggro...
you'll die super fast if you do.

Arcane Mage DPS Help

Anything I should with my gear for better DPS?

Thanks in advance.
those are some strange gems you have.

prismatic: brilliant inferno ruby
blue: veiled demonseye
yellow: artful ember topaz

but your chest, just put 2 brilliant inferno ruby. reason is mathematical.

enchant power torrent on your weapon

reforge.
hit to 1742
haste to 1768
after that, everything else mastery.
crit is what you reforge out of first.
you can use programs like rawr to optimise for you.
Replace the Bottled Wishes with simply anything else. It is only useful for Heroic Spine. Any other trinket from FL or DS would be better for you.

Use the Glyph of Arcane Power.

Regem so that you are only using Brilliant red (int), artful orange (int/mastery), and veiled purple (int/hit) gems. Get rid of the jagged green, nightmare tear, and the level 80 gems. The potent orange is okay... but artful is better.

Reforge to adjust your hit to 17%... anything over that is wasted.

Reforge out of haste and into mastery (or crit). You want aim to get your haste rating down to 1768 (1268 once you get t13). This haste value is the amount of haste that will put your AB cast down to 1 second during hero/timewarp in a raid.

Enchant your weapon with power torrent.

How is this possible?

I've been playing fire all patch and have been doing fairly decently, but I thought I'd switch over to arcane just to check out my deeps. I reforged everything for mastery but didn't bother to re-gem anything, just seeing as how I wanted to get an idea of how much dps I could pull as arcane.

On my burn phase (against raid dummy) I could only muster out 28k dps? (Without timewarp)
How is that possible? Does that sound accurate to you guys? I thought I was pulling that much dps before DS came out. Could someone please look over my reforges and tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Try changing your glyphs

Staff or main with off?

I am about to hit 85, and I was wondering what is the best? I am still new to the whole mage thing. any information or a thread that already exists would be great :D
Add up the stats.

Normally MH/OH will pull ahead due to the +40 int offhand enchant. Make sure to always add +40 int to the MH/OH calculation when comparing the two.

Fireblast and Impact = Broken

Impact: Gives your damaging spells a 5/10% chance to reset the cooldown on Fire Blast and to cause the next Fire Blast you cast to stun the target for 2 sec and spread any Fire damage over time effects to nearby enemy targets within 12 yards.

This is severely broken. I honestly wanted to try Fire PvE but this only worked about 20% of the time in my first dungeon. Anyone else have this issue?

Edit: Changed the title to make the subject a little more clear.
You have to be in combat with the targets you're spreading the DoTs, so just Blastwave them.

And also, from the most recent patch notes they said that it was bugged.

Bug Fixes
Living Bomb’s interaction with Impact has been cleaned up, and should no longer sometimes fail to spread Living Bomb to new targets. We hope.
I havn't really ran into an issue. I actually think it is quite sexy when I have LB, Pyro, Combustion and Ignight, then hit that impact proc.

MmMmMmm..

To answer your question, I have not had(or noticed) an issue.
Deleted by Iin
I think it depends upon the zone somehow.

FL I had issues all the time. (haven't checked since patch)
Normal cata heroics are guaranteed to have a few bad impacts.
Trolls are a little better then normals.
HoT heroics haven't had a noticeable one yet.
DS I haven't had a single bad impact.

It is such a weird bug.
I am still having this problem too. I have noticed that in fights and from raids. I can spam flame strike to my hearts content, or do blast wave on cool down, and more often than not, my impact either never pops, or it does pop, but fails to spread living bomb to other targets opposed to the one that I am striking down.
I wish they'd just let Fireblast auto-spread dots. It's not like you cast it in PvE unless that's your intention. Leave the stun/cd-reset as a proc.

Arcane PvE trinket choice?

hey I'm completely torn when it comes down to deciding between these 3 trinkets to use.

I currently have the foul gift of the demon lord trinket,
RF Will of the unbinding
RF Insignia of the corrupted Mind

Which 2 would be better for PvE arcane mages? thanks.

Still haven't seen an Arcane trink list.

80-85

so what do you think i should use to level from 80-85? i cant decide between fire or frost
Arcane. In 5 mans people shouldn't come close to touching you in terms of damage.

but if you want more fun, I say fire. Spreading your dots around in instances is a lot of fun.
If you plan to play a lot of PvP, frost, if you plan to do serious raiding, fire.

But ultimately, just play whatever you like best. Your spec choice isn't really that important until you are raiding.
Arcane is ridiculous at 80 but drops off in effectiveness sharply after 81.

I would say frost for questing or get used to fire for dungeons.
Arcane is ridiculous at 80 but drops off in effectiveness sharply after 81.

I would say frost for questing or get used to fire for dungeons.
I quested 80-85 as arcane, and my damage output fine. You just need a few upgrades from either AH or Quests for all classes/specs before Cata is no longer "hard".

Although I did enter cata at an iLevel between 232 and 245 and not 180s
Questing is pretty easy from 80-85 as frost.
All three are fine. Just pick one you like.
Until 80 I was always frost, and I do still like the control of frost, but then I switched to arcane (as my other spec) and found that with the talent for auto-applied Slow I can almost always kill stuff before it gets to me anyway. I also liked the higher DPS of arcane, and much of my XP from around 82 until 85 was running instances.
arcane until 83, then your mana pool disappears

am I doing it right?

when running a 5-man, I find myself just spamming fireball and pyroblast! on hot streak procs.

I'm finding my dps is pretty low compared to physical dps classes, though.

am I doing something wrong, or is this just a matter of melee classes scaling exponentially with heirloom weapons?
DPS doesn't matter until you're level 85.

As long as you're not getting kicked just sit back and enjoy.
I WAS WONDERING THE SAME THING. I ALWAYS SEEM TO BE FOURTH IN DAMAGE. ATLEAST I KNOW IM NOT ALONE
Go arcane = WIN
1: Switch to Arcane.
2: Put Arcane Blast on keys 1-0.
3: Apply face to keyboard.
4: Repeat step 3.

If you realise how boring it is before the aneurism gets you, switch to Frost like I did. Also:

DPS doesn't matter until you're level 85.

As long as you're not getting kicked just sit back and enjoy.

Casting

Hi just a quick question, in pvp are you able to continue casting a spell, say frostbolt without repositioning your character?, as in do you have to stop and re cast if the target strafes to the side and moves out of line of sight?
Thanks in advance.
only targeted channeled spells like mind flay or arcane missiles can go through line of sight.. however u need to have started casting it before the target goes out of line of sight..

the only spell that i can think off that can be cast while moving is scorch with the fire talent firestarter..
LoS or out of range is sort of different than if a target moves out of your casting area (ex. behind you). If it's LoS or out of range, the spell will automatically stop casting and you will have to move to a position and re-cast. If the target is just moving, you can hold down the right mouse button and just keep the target in front of you (including if someone goes behind you or 90 degrees to any side of you), the spell will not stop casting.

Rocking the PvP arcane style

Well.. Not exactly..

Basically I used my arcane spec for PvP as a one off and discovered I do way better with it than frost.. As frost, I felt like a pee shooter.. Now using arcane I can kill a player from full in about 5 seconds.. I'm even laying waste to hunters and rouges which I always had trouble wit

Is this normal? Do I just suck with frost? I do feel more confident and fluent using arcane in PvP.. Sure I miss the survivability and CC of frost, but now I feel like I'm doing actual damage.. Even did some 2v2 with a disc priest and did better than expected

I guess my question is, is arcane really viable in pvp? I'm really just mucking around in BGs and a few arenas, but im doing so much better.. Should I respec arcane properly for pvp.. Is there anyone out there who plays arcane solely for pvp?

Or maybe I should jut ditch the frost and relearn to us fire for pvp.. Kind of sick of respecing lol

You were fighting bad rogues and hunters. Trust me when I say that..

Frost will outdo Arcane every time when you are fighting competent people. Of course Arcane has its niche in PVP due to its extreme burst potential but that is really only in RBGs and even that is uncommon compared to Fire in RBGs for spread damage/aoe

Granted, if all you are doing is random BGs by all means play Arcane and blow up noobs who don't know how to play but be prepared to be absolutely destroyed when you fight anyone with half a brain cell.

I currently have 3/4 firehawk pieces. I don't have the pieces that require the fireland raid.

I tried doing firelands tonight (pugged), and we didn't get past shannox.

I also have Robes of Fate, Time-Travelers Leggings, Archivist Gloves, and 2000 VP.

I'm wondering what I should focus on: completing my firehawk 4pc, or, if I should switch into the various pieces of above and use my VP. Also using LFR.

Basically, trying to get some advice on gear priority. I play arcane.

Losing spot in raid please help!

Ok guys here's a brief story I've been raiding consistently with my current guild and was playing catch up on gear all through FL, but now with DS being live I've closed the gap pretty well as far as gear but my dmg isn't increasing enough.

I am being sat for madness encounter (10man) until I can improve my damage. I'm here asking for some help from the fire mages who know more than me to be criticized and given advice.

My gear: you can see it via armory I am gemmed and reforged based on what I believe is correct, int>hit cap>haste(2005+)>crit>mastery

My last weeks attempts hovered at about 34k-38k dps and I was always last in dps next closest is 40k+ consistently and my overall dmg was about 2-3% behind.

We always get to final phase but my dps is holding us back as we 2 heal all of DS we are not getting it done fast enough, by swapping me with a 393 fury war they downed it in 2-3 attempts.

Rotation: keep LB up all times, flame orb on cd, combustion based on combustion helper and optimal debuffs(spreading with impact when necessary) fireball>pyro on HS proc.

AOE: blast wave>DB>Lb(x3)>flame strike>spread any dots via impact

I am asking for any and all help I do not have access to our world of logs but the guild is in my armory if you want to search our logs.

Thank you in advance for any help or pointers
Did you have your 4xt12? If so, you may need to put it back on for now. The 4xT12 is really good for fire mages. I would also suggest downloading Rawr and having it do your reforge. Your crit is still a little low for a fire mage too. You want to be mid-20's self buffed.

You are currently over the hit cap, missing a shoulder enchant and have a mastery gem in your head piece.

EDIT: I did your character in rawr and you need to go back to the 2xT12 (via the shoulders if you have them) and reforge things a bit. I see a 300-400 DPS increase from using the Firehawk shoulders and a reforge.
No I have 3 piece t13 and the 3rd piece is shoulders which the non tier is better stats until I get 4pc. I had the gem for arc I need to switch to an int/crit thank you for spotting that, also I'm working on shoulder enchant as I stated playing catch up on gear.

Anything else you can see or suggest I may be doing wrong?

The other Mage in our group has only around 600 more sp but pulls 4-6% more damage and around 45k-55k depending on HS procs

I do not have 2t12 unfortunately as I said I played catch up through fl and all my raid time is taken up by guild so no time to pug a FL run to get the token for t12

I unfortunately have been unlucky in lfr when I have time getting 4pc bonus

Firehawk Shoulders w/2xT12 bonus is better than firehawk robes and T13 non-tier shoulders was the point I was trying to make but I typed the wrong number.

Download Rawr and input all of the gear you have into it and let it go. There is some thing you are probably not doing right if you are only doing 34-35k on Madness. I am just not sure what.

I was doing 40k+ in my Fire gear and it was not as good as your current gear.
I understood ya np there I just don't have access to 2t12 unfortunately, could you maybe breakdown what you do on madness maybe I'm missing a damage opportunity.

I LB the wing and tentacle in back, flame orb on cd towards the wing, combustion when wing is about 10mil health for max dps via combustion.

Also dps the bolt as well as aoe the hemmorage adds.

Anything I'm missing?
Are you timing your combustion to your trinket proc? If you look at your trinket when it procs and add in stolen time you are miles above what any recommended haste cap.

You should be getting the proc at the start of any pull. Time your combustion 10 to 15 secs after the proc. This allows you time to build stacks of stolen time and roll up crit. If you are 15 secs into the proc and don't have a pyro dot, hard cast it. You are ignoring a major dps increase by not watching that trinket.

On your following combustions you will always be at a full 10 stacks, so it is just a matter of waiting for the trinket to proc. It does have a 45 sec internal cd, but even if you have to wait a full 45 secs on following combustions, it is worth waiting.

The 2 piece you have and the trinket you have allow you to stack much more crit. Stacking crit allows you to keep ignite up and rolling. It will also allow you to burn adds much faster because of a higher chance to crit and spread.

I do not believe the gear optimizer is looking at timing combustion with the trinket proc. The reason we are shooting for 2005 is the extra tic of combustion, but the trinket provides this on proc. As long as you land combustion while the trinket is active, the full duration of the dot will take advantage of the haste.

The other thing to consider is that any time the trinket procs, you should have a pyro dot ticing. If you do not get a proc when the dot falls off, hard cast one. When blood lust is active, if your trinket procs, you should strait nuke with pyroblast. You will be GCD locked with fireball and very close to GCD locked on pyroblast under those circumstance.

The optimizer can not adjust for things like the T12 procing during a dead faze or just shooting the wrong thing. The T13 set bonus allows you to react, and change what you are doing to take advantage of the stacks of stolen time in conjunction with your trinket.

A 300 to 400 dps increase on the final faze of death wing is nothing. Are you standing in the swirls that boost casting speed on death wing? Are you nuking with pyroblast when you are in those swirls? Are you fishing out an impact if one isn't up to spread ignites on the adds? Taking full advantage of the mechanics on that fight should bring your dps up a lot. Under 40k on that fight with all the advantages the fight provides you sounds like you are missing something in your play style to produce the maximum possible from that fight. That fight was made for you to post huge numbers.

I was not timing combustion with trink proc that is a huge oversight thank you. Is there a good add on to alert me of the proc?

Also yes I do stand in the yellow swirls, are you suggesting when trink procs and I have a 10stack from 2pc I should hard cast pyro instead of fireball?

Also what level of haste should I sacrifice to crit?

Thank you for the info it is very helpful

The problem is the other Mage is casting fireball as 70% of his dmg not abusing mechanics and doubling me up in dps almost and almost 3mil more damage

I dont have access to our logs but there posted its my armory guild dunno if you can find it by that or not.

My mage takes on a green glow and a count down timer apears on me when my trinket procs. I am using power auras. I have effects set up for all my procs so I don't have to watch the corner of the screen. Power torrent and the battle one are much harder to take advantage of because I haven't seen the boost that I get out of timing to that trinket.

Even with hard casting pyroblasts, fireball is still most of my casts. I hard cast pyro when the dot is not present and my trinket has proc'd. When my trinket procs and I'm in those swirls, I strait cast pyroblast for my nuke because I am GCD locked for fireball. In otherwords, for that 20 secs the spell cooldown is slower than the cast time. You should have no problem rolling huge crits into combustion at that point. That is not abusing a mechanic. That is using it properly. Look at the parses from other fire magi on world of logs. ALL of the show a high number of hard cast pyro's on that fight.

I have only run Death Wing in LFR so far. I did have some mana issues the first time I did the fight because I was putting out so many pyroblasts and fireballs on top of using flamestrike to fish for impact. I had to bind my armors to keys (which I already had done for pvp in that spec) so I could switch to mage armor quickly when I turned to down adds and when moving between platforms.

I never waste time with an evoke during a fight. I do use my mana gems. Using evoke with a fire mage makes your DPS LOOK like it took a bigger hit than an arcane mage did. The reason for this is an arcane mage doesn't leave a dot. Recount looks at the time an arcane mage is evoking as 0. Since you can't divide by 0, it is treated as out of combat. Your damage done suffers though. Take an arcane mage and a fire mage doing the same dps on a long pull and you will see the fire mage did much more damage. If you have dots rolling on something, you need to be going all out on it. You are better off switching to mage armor 1/4 mana and popping a gem then eating an evoke. Between combustions when adds are out, get in mage armor so fishing for impacts doesn't hurt your mana. Get back into molten as soon as possible. Make sure your back in molten before combustion comes off cooldown. Ignite should be your number 2 or 3 source of damage.
I was arcane for that logged attempt only to provide the 3% buff to raid my raid leader and I agree I need to stay fire now.

Are there mechanics you think I'm missing?
Deleted by Cakezilla
Your DPS numbers say you are not taking advantage of something. 40k was easy for me to obtain in LFR. I have massive lag issues in LFR and will sometimes just freeze when adds are out and everyone is pounding away and during heavy AE fazes. Especially if I just spread an ignite/pyro dot to all the adds.

I do not have the lag issues in a 10 man or 25 man from my server. I look forward to seeing the numbers I post when I am not missing chances to spread extra damage to adds or miss a living bomb because the screen froze for 10 secs when the thing was about to explode.
I pull 55k+ in lfr it seems to be in 10m I fall into the 34-38k range. I know the lfr bosses have lower resistance so I'm aware my dps will inflate in there.

Is there a mechanic I'm missing?
Deleted by Cakezilla
I am standing in the swirl so I know I've got that down I'm multidotting and staying in range for that blast thing on my spell casts.

I think a huge issue was timing of my combustion with proc on trink so I will get power auras to track that, I play on a 60in tv so hard to see those procs sometimes.

I will also reforge for more crit given my trink and 2pc putting me over the combustion haste point.

I'm also talking about 10m normal here I have zero problem in lfr and pull 55k easily and have never not been #1 dps on any boss, but lfr bosses have less resistance so the damage is inflated.

Anything else I'm missing?

Foul Gift trinket for fire

Just got this trinket, is it viable using it over Stump of Time?
I know mastery isnt that great for fire but I had the stump for nearly 8 months already and with it's low ilv would it be worse than Foul Gift?
Stump is actually a pretty crappy trinket based on the proc. (I believe I read it doesn't proc as much as other trinkets).

And based purely on stat ratings, the gift is better.

Though if you are fire, obviously mastery is not the most desirable stat.

Like myself, I have it simply because I don't need the hit from stump and because there is nothing better that I have at the moment.

But it will be the first thing I replace, even though DMC:V is lower ilvl.
Stump hasn't been worthwhile since January last year when it was hard to hit cap in T11 gear. Just about anything else that's reasonably current (378+) will be better.
or if ur like me with nuthin better to use :( fire from what ive seen theres 2 things that really captivate me and 1 is revering my rep for hyjal so i can get that rune of Zeth trink with the 458 crit.. and even if i can get something in bwd like that enraging bell of resonance.. this is of course if i dont get a lfr drop this week again. which is highly likely i wont

Arcane Blast Macro Please

Could someone please share or make an Arcane Blast macro for me that includes the following?

- 4 Arcane Blasts
- Presence of Mind (When not on cd)
- Synapse Springs on my Firehawk Gloves (When not on cd)
- Volcanic Potion (When not on cd)
- Arcane Power (When not on cd)
- Berserking (When not on cd)

I'm sure this is a rather simple macro, I am just very inexperienced at them. Thanks for the help! :)

How do I make it so it uses PoM after my 3rd arcane blast. Also, how do I make it use the rest of that stuff after my 4th arcane blast?
Something like this should work:

/castsequence reset=20 Arcane Blast,Arcane Blast,Arcane Blast,Presence of Mind,Arcane Blast
/use 10
/use Volcanic Potion
/use Arcane Power
/use Berserking

That should work. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll try to tweak it some.
I've always found it cumbersome to use castsequence macros. Also, one thing you need to know is that AP and PoM cannot be used at the same time, so that can sometimes screw up macros that contain both. Much easier to separate them into different macros.

Here's and example of what I use:

#showtooltip Arcane Blast
/use [mod:ctrl] Moonwell Chalice
/use [mod:ctrl] Mana Gem
/cast [mod:ctrl] Arcane Power
/cast Arcane Blast

I just hit it without ctrl enough to get my AB stack up, and then hold ctrl when i want to pop all my cooldowns for a burn. Just add /use 10 and berserking to this, and it should do what you want. Just need to be able to count to 4 or watch your AB stack.

I use a seperate macro for PoM with an option to use a volcanic potion instead:

#showtooltip
/use [mod:ctrl] Volcanic Potion
/cast [nomod] Presence of Mind
/cast Arcane Blast

I usually save my volcanic potion for timewarp:

#showtooltip
/cast Time Warp
/use Volcanic Potion

Note that I dont have any bars bound to ctrl+whatever, so that I can use the mod:ctrl in a lot of macros for different things.
Mine may not be as fancy but it gets the job done. It may require 2 clicks to activate all abilities.

#showtooltip Arcane Blast
/use 10
/use Volcanic Potion
/cast Berserking
/cast Arcane Power
/cast Arcane Blast

Personally i would leave out Presence of Mind and have that keybound separate.

Now to add a cast sequence into this macro to activate everything after 4 AB's would be a PITA to macro, and quite possibly impossible.

What i do is have AB on a keybinding and then ALT + that keybinding activates pewpew mode. (e.g for me MouseWheelDown is my Arcane Blast Keybinding and ALT+MouseWheelDown is my macro)

Hope this helps

First, I'd use Mage Nuggets, and Mage Mana Bar. These will help a lot with monitoring stacks/mana efficiency/etc.

Second, I have 2 macros that I hit after Flame Orb. Since each Flame Orb tick is a different spell cast, you want it up right before you burn. All you'd have to do is add /use 10 in with the first macro (I'm unsure if it triggers the trinket cd or not, as I am not engineering on my mage). If it does, you can just put it in there too and ignore the error messages that pop up, and spam it when the cd comes up.

Optimally you want to be at around....85% mana (wasted mana from mana gem overflow or any other reason is wasted dps) i believe when you start this. I normally spam the second macro just in case Mirror Images decides to be buggy and cast with a gcd.

Flame Orb (Shift-3)

Macro 1: (Shift-4)
#showtooltip Arcane Blast
/use Mana Gem
/cast Presence of Mind
/use 13
/use 14
/cast Arcane Blast

Macro 2: (Shift-5)
#showtooltip Arcane Blast
/cast Arcane Power
/cast Mirror Image
/cast Arcane Blast

raiding professions.

jw what are the best professions for a pve mage. I am currently alch and herb and i dont feel a whole lot of use seeing as we have 2 other alchs on my team to make cauldrons. help me out here
If you are looking at it for straight intellect bonuses, leatherworking and inscription would net you the most I believe. 80 intellect over the bracer enchant and and 80 intellect over Therazane shoulder enchant. Just taking a guess here.
Eng, then all other profs give flat 80int except JC which gives 81
Double flask duration rules not sure why you're speakin' down about alchemy. It also adds 80 int on top of the regular flask buff though only if you have the flask of draconic mind trained.

You will most likely never notice a difference, but if you pick up any crafting profession you'll at least be slightly better on a spreadsheet than with herbalism:

LW/Inscrip/JC/Enchanting all give ~80 int
Blacksmithing gives 80 with rare gems or 100 with 2 epic gems.
Tailoring 580 int proc every now and again, and spellthreads for legs are basically free.
Engineering on use +int on gloves with a 1 min CD i believe.
If cost is not an issue, I believe Tailoring gives the best DPS boost.

Enchanting also gives 2x +40 Int to rings, which is nice.

The Tailoring/Enchanting combo is VERY popular with Mages. But, the prospect of levelling both of those from 1 to 525 is pretty daunting.
I believe right now Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting together give the best bonuses. With BS you get three sockets you can put the JC gems into.
I dont like the tailoring proc, the only reason why if it proc's during a movement phase its wasted. I would say BS because the 2 extra sockets now give +100 intell, thats how mine are atm. JC kinda got screwed with the +50 gems, the 3 JC gems that are +67 can possibly only give you +51 of your main stat, it used to be +81. After BS go with any other +80 bonus.
I have Eng + Tailoring. I like having different the different procs to boost my combustion.

best race for a mage

what race offers the best racials dps wise for a mage right now horde or alliance?
Deleted by Deathsblaze
human.
For PvE Dps I would say on the alliance side Worgen(1% extra Crit chance) and for Horde Troll(20% Casting Speed Increase 3CD or Goblin for the static 1% haste (0.11% less haste then troll racial).
Depends on spec and what faction you really want to play.

Alliance: Arcane - Gnome
Fire-Worgen

Horde: Spit between goblin and troll. Zerking is amazing for burst, but passive haste is also delicious.

But really in the end unless you're raiding in the top 100 guilds and pushing hard mode achievements, doesn't matter what race you play, you should play what you can stand looking at for hours on end, the .01% damage increase you'll get from racials won't change much.

focus magic

anyone else notice that FM isnt working on melee crits today??
Focus Magic:

My Shatter Combo

For those of you out there who haven't figured this out yet, there is a new shatter combo in town.

Because of the Early Frost talent and FoF x2 from Pet Freeze, your shatter combo should be FFB + Icelance.

If done correctly, your FFB and Icelance will both be affected by Shatter. You will have 1 charge of FoF remaining. Use this to stun your target with Deep Freeze. (Note: your opponent will have 1 global cooldown to use between Icelance and Deep Freeze, Shamans may drop grounding and Priests will bubble!)

After the Deep Freeze use Frostbolt. Because you opened with FFB, your frostbolt will have early frost available and will be a very fast cast! YAY!

This is the fun part. pre-lvl 83, SPAM ICELANCE!
once you hit lvl 83 though, you get Ring of Frost!
After the frostbolt, put ring of frost down with your stunned target on the edge of the ring!(it takes 3 sec to form, they cant dodge it cos they are stunned.) Depending on your haste and your distance from the target, you will have time for 1 or 2 icelances!

You now have 8 seconds to CC/Spellsteal/Barrier and Shield up before you smack them with another FFB + Icelance shatter combo!

Yay, you're finished, and so is that opponent.
FFB is great w/glyph especially but my favorite is still -

Stack ABlast
Veins + Trink if you have one
3 Stack Arcane Blast into DF
4 stack Arcane Blast x2
Early Frost Frostbolt
Ice Lance
[Dead]

Sadly not everyone sits still to let me wind it up on them. :(
But it's great for picking geared healers in BGs!

as you say, people need to let you wind it up. and TBH, that's not practical.
I said it was my favorite, not the best or most practical. :P

But you can still do -

Arcane Blast into DF
Arcane Blast
Arcane Blast
Ice Lance

Arcane Blast is shorter cast than FFB and you end the shatter with a 3 stack up. Which is superior depends on the situation but Arcane Blast is still very useful currently. A 2 stack ABlast for me does about the same damage as FFB. A 3 stack is even better.

FFB also opens up your frost and fire school for interrupts, arcane blast of course opens up arcane - depending on class you're facing sometimes one of these schools is preferable to get locked.

Overall the Arcane Blast shatter is higher damage though. If you have enough haste to get 2 in anyway, I run with ~550. Even with low haste, you can also Arcane Blast -> DF -> Arcane Blast -> Early Frost -> IL which is also good damage. Or can use veins to get the 2 Blasts in.

I can also do FFB into DF, FFB + Early Frost Frostbolt + IL in the DF. I use more haste than some mages though, that might be why. Our haste will be lower once we hit 81+ so things will change QQ.
I prefer Poly + Poly + FFB + Freeze/EF + IL + DF + IL + IL + IL + IL when I can be alone with my target.

when I can be alone with my target.

Why do you make it sound so dirty.
as you say, people need to let you wind it up. and TBH, that's not practical.

ding ding
FFB is only affected by FoF if it's instant cast, in which case both charges would be used up. With the frost bolt change is a frost bolt/ice lance shatter better than an ice lance spam now? I haven't tried to use arcane blast with a shatter combo, it seems kind of counter productive to have to sit still to set everything up.
With the frost bolt change is a frost bolt/ice lance shatter better than an ice lance spam now?

I thought Ice Lance was intended to do more damage than Frostbolt on Frozen targets? Could be wrong.

And I also find it silly to use AB for Shatters. To get to the point of surpassing Ice Lance damage to warrant the cast time, you would need at least 1-2 stacks wouldn't you? ~2-4s > 1 GCD? I've never tried it, I just assumed the recent damage nerf to AB would have made that a poor choice. /shrug

edit: removed stuffs.
Frostbolt shatters are definitely better than ice lance spam now, especially non-deep freeze shatters since novas break easily now and you can't spam lance into them.

FFB doesn't need to be used with FoF to be good for shatters, if your target is frozen it gains the exact same benefit it does as when you have brain freeze and FoF up.

Basically FFB vs. Arcane Blast -

FFB does more damage than frostbolt, it leaves a DoT(assuming glyphed), and it doesn't consume early frost. It also can proc FoF. If interrupted you're locked on fire and frost.

Arcane Blast also allows you to start a shatter w/out wasting early frost, is faster cast w/no DoT, and can potentially deal more damage and becomes a faster cast as you gain stacks. It won't proc FoF though. If interrupt you're locked on arcane.

If done correctly, your FFB and Icelance will both be affected by Shatter. You will have 1 charge of FoF remaining.

Read the Brain Freeze tooltip. Second to last sentence.

This is why you have a charge of FoF left over. It's not a matter of "being done correctly", it's a matter of RNG being nice and giving you a FFB crit.

I think what he's getting at is the FFB uses the pet Freeze for its shatter while the IL uses a FoF proc. Then into DF using the second FoF and KaBoom! Makes sense... I think.
o_o

Both the FFB and Ice Lance will benefit from the target being frozen with the pet freeze.

The IL will still use a FoF charge even though it doesn't need one, because it automatically consumes one FoF charge whether or not your target is already considered frozen.

You could still for example, FFB -> Ice Lance into a regular nova when you have no FoF procs, and both the FFB and IL will get the shatter bonus.

Are you certain about this? I thought the new Shatter was determined at spell impact instead of spell cast so that practically any spell will break the Nova (or Freeze) and any other spells in light wouldn't benefit. No more ghosting.

Yeah I removed that part as I was unclear I think.

I was thinking FoF, and didn't realize that Shatter actually boosted the crit chance and the OP was just getting lucky with a FFB crit since FoF didn't affect it. I'm having one of those day... I mean weeks.

And thanks for the clairification Buglamp.
FFB does more damage than frostbolt, it leaves a DoT(assuming glyphed), and it doesn't consume early frost. It also can proc FoF. If interrupted you're locked on fire and frost.

Glyphed FFB has no snare so it shouldn't proc FoF. Unless its one of those 0% snare Chill effects while glyphed.
For those confused about the start of my shatter combo:

Get your pet to Waterbolt.
At the same time start casting FFB (non-instant).
Just before the FFB has finished casting, use your pet's Freeze on the target.
FFB will benefit from Shatter because the target is considered frozen by your pet's nova.
After using the pet's Freeze use IceLance.
Whether or not the target is still frozen doesn't matter because you have FoF x2 up after pet Freeze.

Now you Stun them and blah blah.

You definately raise a good point about Arcane Blast.
At 85, we will have more spell-power, and the 25% DMG from frost specialization will make frostbolt and FFB more powerfull for frost mages than Arcane Blast.

At the moment, Arcane Blast is a very viable alternative, and it's good that you point out that you won't get locked out of Frost and Fire trees if interupted. However, as I said, at lvl 85, frost specialization will make Frostbolt and FFB more dmg.

EDIT: Yes, Glyphed FFB has the chance to proc FoF on successfully damaging a target (so get that 6% hit cap!)

Are you certain about this? I thought the new Shatter was determined at spell impact instead of spell cast so that practically any spell will break the Nova (or Freeze) and any other spells in light wouldn't benefit. No more ghosting.

Yes I am certain. They didn't remove ghosting at all, they just changed FoF to only work with instant spells to prevent ghosting with it. That's why FFB only benefits from FoF when instant, otherwise you'd still be able to ghost with FFB.

as you say, people need to let you wind it up. and TBH, that's not practical.

Honestly, in a BG setting, there are LOTS of times you're free to cast for 10-20 seconds at a time if you're with your team. The bigger the BG, the more the chance, but you can find times like that even in WSG.

Not getting the reference of "lightning war" as a mage o.0
7/10 though. It's fierce like your level 80 herb dealing mage.

The build your talent tree thread.

I like some of the changes made on the new calculator. I still think they need a lot of work. It has been stated they do indeed read these forums; as such I would like to create a build your on talent tree thread.

Though they will more than likely not use one of our trees straight out, some of the concepts presented by players that actually play the class can be conveyed to the designers. My idea for a talent tree adds a fire, frost and arcane ability to each level.

15 Talents:
Blazing Speed , *Ice Barrier and *Mana Shield
*Ice Barrier- now freezes targets for 4 seconds within 9 yards when the barrier is destroyed.
*Mana Shield- ratio is .5 mana:1 hit point, finishes the cool down on blink and makes it free to cast for 5 seconds should the mana shield be destroyed.

30 Talents
Dragons Breath, *Arcane Lightning and Frostjaw
*Arcane Lightning- Arcane Lightning flies at enemies in front of the caster, dealing 1200 arcane damage and dazing them for 3 seconds

45 Talents
Scorch, *Presence of Mind and *Shattered Lance
*Presence of Mind- now allows for 2 instant cast spells (like arcane flows)
*Shattered Lance- your next 2 Ice Lances cause triple damage.

60 Talents
Cauterize, *Greater Invisibility, *Cold Snap
*Greater Invisibility- Also reduces the CD to 3 minutes
*Cold Snap- cooldowns that are finished are based on spec.

75 Talents
*Explosive Polymorph, Double Polymorph, *Frozen polymorph
*Explosive Polymorph- When the polymorphed target is damaged, the enemy explosively reverts back to his normal form, knocking him straight up in the air several feet and stunning them for 2 seconds.
*Frozen Polymorph- Your polymorphed targets are frozen and cannot generate any health.

90 Talents
*Blastwave, Slow, *Ice Blast
*Blastwave - If an enemy is targeted a wave of flame radiates outward from the target, damaging all enemies caught within the blast for 1043 damage and are slowed by 70% for 3 sec. If an ally or the caster is targeted a wave of flame radiates outward from the caster or ally damaging all enemies caught within the blast for 1043 damage, knocking them back and dazing them for 3 sec.
*Ice Blast- Target is struck by a large chunk ice, knocking him/her back and stunning them for 3 seconds.

First mage, need help with rotatoin

I started a Fire/Frost mage a day or so ago, he's level 26 now, and so far I think mages are quite neat. I just want a rough idea of what I'm getting into, I just notice that even heirloom gear I am not putting out the damage I would desire.

So far, (main spec fire) I am keeping my Polyblast ticks up and spec'd into Ignite and Impact, so I'm always proking Fire Blast as much as I can, as well as taking every proc of Arcane Missles.

I know that as I level it will get better and easier, but this is my first mana using ranged class I've played so help from experienced mages would be appreciated :>

PVP Fire Trinket Question

Insignia of the Corrupted Mind or Will of Unbinding?
I would probably go with Insignia because the amount of haste is ridiculous.
That's what I figured. Love the proc

Can someone explain..

why my Water Elemental has a 14 day duration remaining on Bloodlust (50% haste version) and Echo of Light?

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7444/wowscrnshot022012083230.jpg
I can only explain that I am jealous and that you should not dismiss your water elemental. Make sure to put up a ticket though. This should be reported :O
Because the gods of frost-magery love you?
You obviously haven't been feeding your Water Ele enough warriors lately.
shiat.... now only if water elementals had that 100% all the time then maybe they might do some DECENT damage........ NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rune of teleportation help

So im new when to the teleport trainer in darrness. night elf city I recived the training but have no idea where to buy the rune please help
You buy it from a reagent vendor. Ask a guard in any major city.

Cenarion Enclave, northern Darnassus

Once you get close you can see the vendor on your minimap if you have vendor checked.
Uh... Miiiiight wanna check the dates of the posts in a thread before responding in the future, Jhondran.

Low DPS with Fire?

I dont seem to put out as much DPS as I expected with Fire spec in Bg's, Am I better off with Frost wich is my OS, or Arcane.
Look at my equipment and tell me if I have set myself up wrong
You're missing the single most important talent that makes fire spec work in pvp: Shatter. More crits = more hot streak, which is more damage.

Also, from what I've seen a lot of the time in a bg, a fire mage isn't going to focus someone down, necessarily. What fire mages excel at is getting a few seconds to dot someone up in a big melee, then when Hot Streak procs you Nova/CoC (with Imp. CoC talented), Pyro the now-frozen target in the face with tripled crit chance, follow it up with Combustion and Blast Wave/Flame Strike to fish up an Impact proc, and spread those dots to half or more of the opposing force. At that point the dispellers and healers are pretty hard pressed to clear everything off and keep people standing.
I'm okay with Fire in PvP. It's not as good as Frost, but I don't PvP all that often or seriously. You really do need to get as many crits as possible- if I'm doing well, every other to every third spell is Impact or Hot Streak, which means more awesome damage.

Quick Fire World/BG pvp video for Patch 4.3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI8NXjHsb4w
With WoW patch 4.3 comes a new raid tier, a new pvp season, transmogrification, and most importantly MAGE BUFFS (Ghostcrawler is smart)! !
Heres some of the footage I got while trying out fire for the first time in Cata on the PTR.

Includes: World PvP, faceroll, Fire Mage, a little bit of frost mage, clean UI + editing.

Does Not Include: competitive arena, fancy addons.

Music by: Starwarspunk - Use My Dagger (Maklibek remix)
Sorry for the rogue music, next time ill get mage music :)

Any1 else switching to fire for bg/arenas next season?
No Arcane Intellect or Mage/Frost/Molten Armor.

You have balls.
Still deciding on fire for pvp or not
but for pve fire > dull arcane

been fire pvping..I am missing the better control of frost...but fire got some nice damage but is frustrating when no hot streaks.....love hate relationship
yeah, just hope for no unlucky breaks on frostnova or cone of cold freeze.
If you dont mind cutting some resil, 4 piece t12 works good too.

fire is a very powerful mage spec. i honestly always did better as fire... not that i did any more than just low arenas but i do know of a few fire mages that are WAY up there in 3s.

in 2s its just mad fun to go fire/frost mages and in 5s fire is nuts. the aoe control is out of this world.

the only problem is we suffer from high dispels... oddly enough frost does as well. the only difference is that frost has more survivability but less mobility versus dmg than we do

Macro help!!

My frostbolt is set to 1 and i was wondering if anyone knew a macro where it would stop casting if i pressed 1 again. This would be to help me juke interrupts and such... So I would press 1 for frostbolt but someone would attack me so i would press 1 again to cancel it. Soo anyone know a macro for that? sorry im new to mage. Thanks! :D
I don't think so no.

There are many alternatives though. A simple jump, moving or pressing the escape key.
try

/stopcasting
/cast frostbolt

Haven't tested it, but i could see it working.. :\

That will only do what he wants if he hits it while still in the global cooldown. Otherwise, it'll just restart frostbolt again.
That's a horrible macro for pvp because you need to be spamming FB the second it stops casting so you can get a lot of damage in.

Just move. Tap left or right, forwanrd, whatever, to juke.

Yea.. i kinda relized after a while of pvping how stupid I was for asking for that lol. ty everyone tho
u just tap move your character a bit it'll stop casting whatever.
Or just add /stopcasting to your other spells

Fire Mage Haste Question

right now i'm at 2091, with the tier bonus I can reach the goblin's haste plateau of 2591, which gives me 13 ticks of combustion. (3/3 NP, no DI or 5% haste buff)

our hpally healer mainswitched to a resto sham. so now i'll be getting the 5% spell haste buff every raid.

for 13 ticks of combustion, I only need 1858 (which is 1358 with tier bonus). but for 14 ticks, i will need 3027 (2527 with tier bonus).

Should I reforge haste down to 1358 and keep combustion at 13 ticks? or should i reforge more into haste up to 2527 for 14 ticks? If i reforge for 14 ticks, I will lose about 3-4% crit.
(im at 2091 right now)
Down to 1358 and the rest into crit; 1 tick of combustion won't be as valuable as a more steady ignite + the obvious bonus dmg from a pyro/FB crit.
bump.

anyone else?

Just wanted to leave this right here.

Add-on for spellstealing?

whats a good addon for knowing if a mob can have a successful spell stolen?
thanks

Spellstealer, you can find it at curse . c o m.
Also, part of mage nuggets.
you can also set up xpearl to show spellstealable buffs extra large on targets
I have used spellstealer and loved it. It made me start thinking about all of the things I could dispel on enemy targets when I was healing on my priest instead of playing my mage.

Spellstealer appeared to be for mages only, so I switched to DispelWatch which works for all classes. If you can't find DispelWatch on Curse, I think it is on WoW Interface.
I just look at their buffs for one that has a thicker border around it. This means it can be stolen.
I use Mage Nuggets and it works quite well.
if by "mob," you mean "alliance priest," then the addon is "spam spellsteal until you steal their power word: shield." The addon makes a pretty chord sound and you get a yellow bubble.

Playing With Fire. Rate Me

Hello all. Just started playing my mage again awhile back and was always arcane. I have tried out fire (for pve and pvp) and I'm loving it. I just need some advise on my gear and stats. I am at the 17% hit(for raids) just not sure if I have too much haste. I can pull big numbers in 5mans and raids. Just want to know what you all think.

Rate my transmog

Hey guys, heres my transmog set for a fire mage, what do you reckon?

Arcane PVE Help

So both me and the Mage in my 10man group can't figure out how to boost her Dps (damage done). I know that fire is better but Arcane is what she likes to play.

Here is a link to OUR WoL
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-deg6dajivmbenw2z/analyze/dd/source/?s=931&e=1241

She beat the lock because he died 2 times... I look mainly at Untrax because I would think its a good fight to judge ppls dps on. But for Arcane, im not sure how much you can really get from WoL, other then how hard her AB/AM hits on average and how much mana she gets back.

Here is a link to her armory, tho I see nothing wrong with her gear.

Any tips or suggestions would help a lot. Thank you for your time.
I would tell her to just read over the posts in the forums and find out the proper rotation, that dps is very low for her gear. and I see that her hit chance is only at 15.87% she will want that to be around 17.00
Mages meta gem is only thing standing out to me. Should the the INT/+crit damage one.
- stacking all of her's dps cds for the burn phase of the rotation is key. Mana Emerald, trinkets, Arcane Power, and anything else. Then Evo at 35% mana.
-since she has the 2 pc T13 she doesn't need to reforge any haste at all just put it all in mastery. Her hit is a bit too low for the allowed thresh hole. Normally being .5-.75 is fine for more int, but shes under by 1.13%.
-even with the t14 4 pc, Arcane power will be up very frequently, but still save your burn phase for when your mana emerald is off CD. Still use Arcane Power on CD but don't blow all of your mana.
-Other than that I can only assume that she knows the basic of playing an arcane mage.
He appears to be significantly under the hit cap
I got her to 17% hit rating last night she musta switched some thing around.

So your saying - Do a burn phase everytime Mana gem off CD ?
Thanks for the meta gem info.

Thanks for the feed back so far!
Yep, stack as many Dps CDs on the burn a phase.
Far too much haste.

She's choosing to forge out of crit instead of haste because she hasn't looked at the tooltip of her 2-set. She's definitely below gcd on AB at some points.

This is a link to her optimal forging for the time being. In order to make hit cap she'll have to put 50 hit on boots or use a different sub-optimal enchant or gem so it's a personal choice at this time:

http://www.wowreforge.com/US/Kil%27Jaeden/Ekh%C3%B2?template=Hit=1742+,Haste=1268+:1,Crit:1.5264,Haste:1.651,Hit:3.7385,Mastery:1.8376&reforge=343554--3534340434343534------34--

I've also seen worse results keeping IA up on Ultraxion as arcane as she is doing although I may have just gotten terrible rng or something the couple times I have tried it.

Your priest wasted PI at one point on her as well. Need to wait until AP is done. A mage will always take AP over PI given the choice.
Thanks for the link to the reforge thing, what is IA?

And thanks for the tip on PI (im the priest) I figured giving her PI at the start will help her keep the mana pool up higher for a longer time period then she could do AP to burn the rest of it. But i guess i had it backwards.
Incanter's Absorption. Noomage is suggesting that she's using Mana Shield, which she shouldn't be on the fight. With the way Mana Adept works, it's a dps decrease because of the GCD and mana lost.
Ahh okay thank you.

mages left out?

any other mages feeling a bit left out of the Mists media coverage? i mean, its not like i dont see that other classes have just as little coverage, like rogues and preists, but with my mage being my main, i get a little worried when i actively look for cool new mage abilities and i find things like "glyph of momentum" and "crittermorph". are mages just that unpopular that we havent found their cool new abilities? or are mages going to remain relatively unchanged in mists? it just saddens me and makes me jealous (ill admit it) looking at druids and warlocks getting massive changes and i see our spells getting little to no overhaul. oh well, iv e said my peace. ttyl

EDIT - p.s. il admit, the new glyph of shadowbolt is amazing. that is all
I can't wait till I get my beta key so I can start rectifying this problem. I want to make videos that showcase our new spells, mechanics and rotations so more people know how we're intended to work, and can keep think-tanking from there.
I have this awful habit of reading the first line or two of posts and leaving out comment for the rest.

I should add that it doesn't look like mages are getting an overhaul this expansion. If you think about it, we're pretty solid as-is. Our balance is a little wonky and we have some irritating and clunky mechanics, sure. But the core themes of each spec are good.

Arcane: Heavy direct damage, focus on mana and AB stacks.
Fire: Heavy dot damage, focus on aoe and crits.
Frost: Heavy instant damage, focus on timing and proc management.

That's how we work right now. And in MoP, none of that is changing much. Instead, we'll be The Same, But Polished™.

Arcane is getting some rotational complexity, which we all clamored for. Fire's losing some rng, which we all clamored for. Frost's getting reworked in a way that allows it to be fully, 100% viable in pve, which...a handful of us obsessed frosties clamored for. Shaddap.

Anyway, my main point here is that we aren't getting a hundred new mechanics and fifty new spells, but we don't really need that much. And really, the few things we -are- getting are pretty fricking cool, wouldn't you agree?

In case some people haven't been digging, here's some of what you can look forward to:

o Frozen Orb, a classic ability from D2 that spews ice bolts everywhere
o Three different bomb spells, each with their own niches (read more here: http://lhiveras-library.com/content/look-mage-aoe-mists-pandaria)
o Alter Time, which lets you undo damage taken, mana spent and other stuff within a few sec
o Inferno Blast, which gives Fire a way to force a hot streak after only one crit
o Multi-target ice lance and arcane barrage
o Talented and glyphed self-heals
PvE, things are mostly staying the same. There will be a few things to clean up/improve rotation. Net effect, slight improvement, but not a significant change.

PvP, we are screwed with things as they are. Most classes are gaining mobility and/or snares. We are losing mobility. You can really feel the lose, especially in fire. My druid, pally and DK all feel like I can hold onto things much better. And after trying out a monk, they are going to be VERY mobile. If mages are going to even have a semblance of balance in PvP, the talents need to be seriously looked at.
I'll be hoping to showcase on youtube mage stuff in full come my beta key.
I for one am glad, every xpack i get screwed on my main. I loved my hunter and pally in wrath and the had to screw it up.

Fire Mages Getting some love?

Was looking at the patch notes and saw Fire getting a buff. Now I havent played mage in AGES and the only class pve wise I will ever play is Fire. Any idea if this buff is enough to compete? I have no idea what their current state is.

Thanks
Fire should be perfectly viable 4.3
It's simming to be neck-and-neck with Arcane if the changes go live, and will probably maintain that position even deep into T13 gear. Arcane might pull ahead at the highest ilvls of gear but Fire catches back up and surpasses Arcane when in Molten Fury range. At least those were my impressions.
Remember that by going Fire you will no longer be providing the 3% damage buff to your raid. This is mainly a problem in 10 player groups where you're less likely to have that buff available from someone else. That said, I expect Arcane will still end up being the spec of choice in 4.3.
But you bring 5% crit to whatever boss youre attacking.
It seems to me that they may have actually overdone the buffs to fire mages in 4.3. A slight reduction to the fireball buff, maybe down to 10-15% from 17% (I haven't done the math, so I'm not sure what exact value would be good) would probably put fire where it needs to be.

My Hit Rating is getting lower every level

after the latest hotfixes my level 44 mage now shows that i have a -9.39% hit chance or a 13.39% chance to miss on a equal level mob. is this a bug that is affecting anybody else ? or am i just that lucky.
so when i join a random dungeon it goes away but comes back the moment i leave. and with every level i gain my hit chance is actually getting lower.
Is it more then visual, I have never seen this.
its actually affects game play. After killing myself by jumping off a mountain it finally went away..

only to later join a random dungeon .. which ironically enough use to make it stop .. brought back again ..

and since Ive leveled again now my chance to miss is 13.67% per equal level mob
It is completely normal.

the number of Hit rating point you need for 1% hit increase every level.

For example at :
Level 70: 12,62 hit rating = 1%
Level 80 : 26,23 hit rating = 1%

So if you level from 70 to 80 without adding hit rating your chances to hit get divided by more than 2.

Basically each level you go up you need more hit rating to be capped.

Normal.
but my hit rating was showing a red (like say when you die and use a spirit healer and your stats are shown in red) it was showing a negative 9.33% hit rating. this has lasted for 2 days.

now knock on wood at the moment it seems to be ok

Buying 397 items Valor points

What items would you buy first with your valor points?
The cape is best in slot and cheap at 1250 VP.

You need to replace your helm -- spirit marks you as a noob. I know, I know, I have two caster characters wearing the helm because it was available cheaply, from a quest.

The other thing to get is the neck piece.

With those three things, you should be golden.
I started by buying all the non set pieces first such as back/neck/ring. Those should be your first 3 vp purchases.
And ideally use an alt to buy your main boots and wrists to get you started.

Cloak first since it's BiS. Other good items to buy are:

Ring
Amulet
Wand
Boots
Belt

I recommend skipping the helm. It's very expensive at 2200 valor points. And chances are fairly decent that if you run LFR every week you might get a tier helm which would be superior if it gives you a set bonus.

Can you win a DUEL as arcane?

I have A LOT of fun playing arcane in random bgs. I've become such a good escape artist.

However, I rarely duel, my priority is very much PvE. I get the occasional random player asking me to duel, and I always turn them down. I typically tell them "Buzz off, I'm here to quest." Loremaster - you will be mine!

So, I've probably dueled as many times as the fingers on my hand.

I had a guildmate who wanted to duel with me yesterday for the fun of it.

He was feral druid in full PvP, I was in full PvE, and he won every fight while I seriously had no idea what I should be doing.

His conclusion: you need resil and become frost.

I asked him if that meant he would like me to do our raid this week-end as frost . . .

He said no. ;)

Although it did get me thinking: How does one even win a duel as arcane?

I mean other than frost nova and AB, combined with high haste, what else can you do?

ETA: I just noticed the other thread about beating feral druids 1v1, and it being basically impossible. So, I guess even as frost I'll never beat this guy?
He was feral druid in full PvP, I was in full PvE, and he won every fight while I seriously had no idea what I should be doing.

This alone means he could spam mangle and own you hard.

And no, frost can do just fine vs feral. GOOD ferals will tear you up, but GOOD frost mages know how to avoid even being hit.
I've not done any formal 1v1 duels with my character because nobody ever challenges me to one.

However, I've faced off 1v1 against people in BGs. Winning a duel as Arcane requires quick thinking and good timing, it also really depends on knowing your opponent's class.

For example, you don't want to waste your Blink and Frost Nova against a Rogue that hasn't used Shadowstep and Shadowdance yet.

Presence of Mind should be used situationally and preferably for a spell requiring casting time that will help spur of the moment. For example, if you've got Frostfire Bolt glyphed, you can Presence of Mind a Frostfire Bolt onto a Rogue to cause them to burn, making their Vanish only last for three seconds tops unless they burn Cloak of Shadows to remove the DoT.

Controlling range, timing your Mana Shield/Mage Ward and Blink and make sure to maintain Slow on them at all times.
Few months back a well geared holy paladin was doing 1000g duels. I was a PVE geared arcane mage so I took him up on his offer.

He died.

The funniest part was after 2 arcane blasts he popped bubble, before I even popped cooldowns. It was at this time that I noticed the icon for lightweave's proc is the same as the icon for arcane power. I'm pretty sure he thought I'd popped cooldowns, and that's why he bubbled. As soon as his bubble wore out he got gibbed.
well, I meant without the other person just being FAIL :P

I mean, yesterday I actually won the gurubashi arena as arcane!

Waited till there was one person left, pew pew them down with AB from up in the stands, and proceeded to open the chest before anyone got stop me XD

Also, I later found a horde along the shores of booty bay, attacked him, he ran after me, I popped my mirrors . . . and yes - HE ATTACKED THE MIRRORS XD

and that time it was a warlock :L

I feel bad killing locks; they're such an endangered species.
I suppose if you were a boss at fake casting and somehow got the distance to put a serious hurt on someone you could win as arcane.

However, I feel it's probably around the worst dueling spec in all of wow.
I'm not really sure how to beat a feral druid as arcane, considering that the nature of dueling means he will probably get the opener on you.

It works on a lot of melee to spam a glyphed Slow from max range, and bombard with instants (primarily Barrage and Lance). If they blow important CDs to get you in range, you can then use Blink to get back to range, now secure in the knowledge that you essentially have X seconds of them having little to no way of getting to you. But this is hard to pull off when they have a 50% slow and melee range on you from the start. Hope he gets giddy and blows Feral Charge on your Mana Shield knockback? Some druids do that, because they assume they've got you, and they try to tunnel REALLY HARD. If he's one of those kinds of ferals, you have a chance. Get him to range, spam Slow more than you need to, hit him with instants. Save casts and CDs for after he blows his gap closer, but don't let him get too close. Trinket the instant Cyclone if he catches you with it.

It also helps to have pvp gear and a pvp arcane spec before you try dueling with it. I've found Impact to be really useful for getting initial distance. Of course, it involves some RNG, especially if he's on you IMMEDIATELY, but that's the nature of trying to pvp as the non frost mage.
Beating a stealth class as a glass cannon?

LOL
Beating a stealth class as a glass cannon?

LOL

Yeah, this just shows how little I PvP outside of BGs.

lt's actually kinda reassuring knowing I never had a chance :P

It's possible but it is very difficult.

Arcane mages have terrible survivability and they are balanced based on the support other players have around them.

A good rogue, fire mage (that pillar humps), feral druid, warrior, death knight all can beat us very very quickly. Also warlock with felhunter out (unless you fake cast so the felhunter locks your other spell school, not arcane school).

I still love arcane i have two specs for it, one for pve, the other for pvp ^_^
But if I lose in 1v1 situation, I dont usually make great deal out of it. We have terrible survivability. If your opponent knows the mage class really well, we are meant to lose unless we have help :-)

But when we can free cast and blow cooldown uninterrupted... we can kill almost anything. A true glass cannon indeed.

cloak > get max distance > slow > pop AP, MG, 2k int trink > AB spam > Nova + Blink when he's at melee range > get max distance and AB spam again.
Thanks for the tip about casting slow! I hadn't even thought of that because I'm used to it just being applied with AB. Man, the PvP world is such a different monster. I seriously respect you guys that do this on a serious level.

I got a little revenge on my feral druid guildmate tonight. When we were done raiding, I put up a port for him to use . . . to exodar bwahahahaah

YES - He clicked on it :P
1) Feral Drood in full PvP vs Arcane mage using a PvE gear and spec = you had NO chance of winning that.

I have a distinctly average PvP set (All Ruthless and a couple of Cataclysmic pieces) giving 43% Dmg mitigation because of resilience. Resilience makes a LOT of difference in PvP (as you'll notice when you get 90k crits against players who have no resilience).

Even if you had full PvP gear, a PvP geared Feral Drood is going to kick your !@#$. I have no idea how an Arcane Mage is supposed to kill one of those - they ignore all our CC and they can easily run rings around our main Dmg spells to LOS us.

2) Your Arcane spec is PvE. You NEED Improved Counterspell, Improved Blink and Improved Polymorph if you're going to PvP as Arcane. Personally, I have 1 Arcane spec for PvP and 1 Arcane spec for PvE.

Hope this helps.

I got a little revenge on my feral druid guildmate tonight. When we were done raiding, I put up a port for him to use . . . to exodar bwahahahaah

YES - He clicked on it :P

or you can Presence of Mind as you AB so its instant as well and no need to channel. but i prefer to save my presence of mind on a poly + A.Barrage so it wont heal and you get a free stun. but i can see your spec is pve. thats as best as you can go for a pvp arcane

Against a 2400+ rogue willing to use prep, you're unlikely to win as arcane, I would think. I have a friend who plays arcane and does fairly well in duels, though.

Usually, he'll use arcane power ---> nova --> shattered arcane barrage. Once an opponent has used his interrupt, the arcane mage is free to cast in their face which can be GG.

Against other mages, arcane fairs pretty well because improved blink + slow offers incredible defense. You can blink away defensively and spam arcane barrage from a distance. Since they're slowed you can approach for a nova+cs ---> shattered arcane barrage which can really hurt if it is used along with arcane power.
The answer is YES. You forgot to mention Mirror Image and Ring of Frost and Invisibility

I'm not a hardcore dueler, but you can blow some people up during a 3 second Improved Polymorph stun + 4 second blanket CS silence. Versus casters you shouldn't have much trouble, but a couple of melee might certainly pose a problem. Rogues and Druids give me problems in BGs. I'd probably seldomly stand a chance in which they get an opener in a duel setting.
Rule # 1

Don't even think about pvp if you don't have a pvp set. Resilience is a requirement not an option.

On my hunter I drop pve mages instantly... so whether your fire frost or arcane, it doesn't matter, just get some resilience first and you will see a difference.
As far as a Rated BG or Arena Arcane is just bleh. Just don't do it beyond 2's. But in Bg's and duel's Arcane can be very deadly I will give an example.

Against a non stealth class I would open a 1 vs 1 with a sheep and get max range if possible, followed by dropping a Ring of frost and a hard casted AB, by the time the stun is over from poly they get hit by ring of frost, then I pop Cd's followed by a arcane blast and barrage which crit due to shatter (if your a pvp Arcane mage and didn't spec shatter smack yourself:p). Usually I will blink toward's them, land a nova try a fake cast to bait an interrupt and finish them off with arcane blast/ barrage. I blink toward's them so if it is mellee and they live through that as they tend to do sometimes, once there out of the nova they pop my bubble knockback which opens up options of trying to finish them with a quick blast or hit slow and kite with barrage/fire blast.

Now that's in a perfect world, but if timed right and in proper gear, with a mastery proc from your trinket you can kill any class faster than any class or spec in the game. I mean flat out 4 global a 4.6 resil target due to shatter so fast he checks his combat log. And a well timed blink+invisble and you have your very own vanish if not dotted. against mellee you can restart the fight with it using a poly/evocation combo. But at the end of the day one mistake and your toast 1 vs 1. A decent feral who land's pounce is GG I don't care how perfect you play.

In the end I would agree with your friend. Frost is played by a skilled player can be a game changer. No class can peel off a flag carrier like a frost mage. With all his bag's of tricks he can lock down group's for precious time for his FC to reach a safe distance, or deliver INSANE burst if your a mastery stacker, but it's not as easy as it look's. But nothing in this game will ever give you the same pleasure as watching a Cata geared mellee sitting in your nova watching you hardcast his doom and there is nothing he can do about it....priceless.

Edit: Also always expect them to trinket the sheep at start, they may be smart and not, but some panic against arcane. Lay the ring of frost right on the edge of there feet where the edge of the green circle just barely touches them. That way if they do trinket the stun or poly, they will be stuck in Ice. And if they waited it out and trinketed the ice. RUN:) I also find Ice block a life saver as arcane with dot's(our bane) or waiting out a blink cooldown. The stun from poly, the knockback of the bubble, and the speed burst after blink are all tool's to make Arcane survive. You just gotta be on point. And against a geared hunter with 3 brain cells. GG. And the one's I hate the most DK's. If there good as arcane bend over:p
